Little things pile up
When you buy many 99 cents stuff, they add up to a good amount and you realize that you have spent lots of money- at least more than what you have expected.
Water drops add up also- so if your sink is dripping, the water adds up.
You pick up one penny on the street, if you do that 100 times, you get $1.
You are slightly annoyed at someone's habit/action but choose to ignore it, but over time, all these little things pile up and you might find the person distasteful.
